LUTA LIVRE

Luta Livre ("free fighting") is a Brazilian grappling art born in Rio de Janeiro in the 1920s, developed by Euclydes "Tatu" Hatem from catch wrestling roots. While Brazilian Jiu Jitsu grew around the gi, Luta Livre took the opposite path — a no-gi discipline built for speed, scrambles, and control through the body alone, without relying on clothing grips.

For decades, Luta Livre and BJJ were fierce rivals, often settling their differences in legendary Vale Tudo matches that helped shape modern MMA. That rivalry pushed both arts to evolve — and Luta Livre's emphasis on leg attacks, fast transitions, and positional control remains one of its defining strengths today.

At Constrictor Team Australia, Luta Livre is trained alongside BJJ and No-Gi, reflecting our team's philosophy from the start. The Constrictor system is based on the most effective elements across grappling arts — BJJ, Judo, and Luta Livre alike.

What to Expect in a Luta Livre Class?

  • Warm-up: Wrestling-based movement drills, mobility work, and live movement games.

  • Technique training: Takedowns, leg attacks, scrambles, and positional control adapted for no-gi grappling.

  • Positional drills: Applying techniques against real resistance with a training partner.

  • Rolling (sparring): Live grappling to test timing, control, and problem-solving in real time.

  • Cool down: Light stretching and mobility work to aid recovery and reduce injury risk, wrapping up the session on a controlled, low-intensity note.

High intensity: Fast-paced exchanges that build cardio, reflexes, and adaptability.
