Frequently Asked Questions
I'm a complete beginner. Can I still train at Constrictor Team?
1
Absolutely.
Most of our students started with no previous martial arts experience. Our Fundamentals classes are specifically designed to teach the core movements, positions, escapes, and principles of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in a safe and structured environment.
You don't need to be fit, flexible, or know anything about grappling to get started. Just show up and we'll guide you through the process.
Am I too old to start Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?
2
Not at all.
We have students from a wide range of ages and backgrounds. Some start in their teens, while others begin in their 40s, 50s, and beyond.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu relies on technique, leverage, and timing rather than strength or athletic ability, making it suitable for people of all ages.
Do I need to be fit before joining?
3
No.
Getting fit is one of the benefits of training, not a requirement to begin.
Our classes allow you to progress at your own pace. As your technique improves, you'll naturally develop strength, mobility, endurance, and confidence.
What should I wear for my first class?
4
Comfortable training clothes are perfect for your first session.
A t-shirt or rash guard with shorts or activewear is ideal. If you're attending a Gi class and don't yet own a uniform, let us know and we'll help you get started.
Bring a water bottle and arrive a few minutes early.
Do you offer classes for children?
5
Yes.
Our Kids Program focuses on confidence, discipline, respect, coordination, and self-defence skills in a fun and structured environment.
Classes are designed to help children develop both on and off the mats while learning authentic Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
Can I train if I've never played sports before?
6
Definitely.
Many students join Constrictor Team with little or no sporting background. Our beginner-friendly classes focus on learning fundamentals in a supportive environment where everyone progresses at their own pace.
Is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu good for self-defence?
7
Yes.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was originally developed as a practical self-defence system. It teaches you how to remain calm under pressure, control distance, escape dangerous situations, and defend yourself against larger or stronger opponents.
Our self-defence curriculum focuses on realistic scenarios and practical skills that can be applied in everyday situations.
What's the difference between Gi and No-Gi Jiu Jitsu?
8
Gi training uses the traditional kimono (Gi), allowing grips on the jacket and pants.
No-Gi training is performed in rash guards and shorts, creating a faster-paced style that is closely connected to wrestling and mixed martial arts.
Both styles develop strong grappling skills and complement each other extremely well.
11
How many classes per week should I attend?
9
For beginners, two to three classes per week is ideal.
This allows enough time to build skills consistently while still giving your body time to recover.
Some students train more frequently, but consistency is always more important than volume.
Is sparring mandatory?
10
No.
While sparring (rolling) is an important part of learning Jiu Jitsu, beginners are never forced into anything they are uncomfortable with.
You'll be introduced to live training gradually as your confidence and understanding develop.
Do I need to compete?
Not at all.
Many members train purely for fitness, self-defence, stress relief, and personal development.
Competition is available for students who are interested, but it is never a requirement.
